Street Department

SNOW REMOVAL: It is unlawful for the occupant of any lot or lots or the owner of any vacant lot or lots within the corporate limits to allow snow, sleet, mud, ice, or other substance to accumulate on the sidewalks to permit any snow, sleet, ice, mud, or other substance to remain upon said sidewalk. All sidewalks within the business district shall be cleaned within five (5) hours after the cessation of a storm, unless the storm or fall of snow shall have taken place during the night, in which case the sidewalk shall be cleaned before eight‑thirty (8:30) o’clock a.m. the following day; Provided, sidewalks within the residential areas of the Municipality shall be cleaned within twenty-four (24) hours after the cessation of the storm.

STREETS/MOWING/ALLEYS: The city requests that property owners, occupants, or persons do not direct grass clippings into the street and/or curb. Such grass clippings may stop or obstruct the passage of water in a street gutter or curb and is prohibited in Municipal Code, Section 6‑329.

The Street Dept. will grade alleys when necessary, and furnish street sweepings for holes, etc. The city does not furnish gravel, white rock, or sand for alleys. The Street department does sell gravel, etc. for those residents who wish to buy gravel for their alleys or driveways.

It is unlawful for any person or corporation to obstruct, or encumber, by fences, gates, buildings, structures, vehicles or otherwise, any of the streets, alleys, or sidewalks. (Municipal Code, Section 8‑104)

Following a wind storm the city street dept. will pick up large limbs that have fallen on the street or city parquets.

TREES: “Street Trees” are trees, shrubs, bushes, and all other woody vegetation on the street right of‑way, commonly called parquets, lying between property lines on either side of all streets, avenues, and ways within the City, and, the street driving surface. It is unlawful for any person, property owner, or occupant to remove any “street tree” within the City without first applying for and procuring a permit. The permit is obtained at the City Office and there is no fee for the permit.

Trees may be planted on the City parquet provided it is an approved tree and meets planting guidelines. Guidelines may be obtained at the City Office.

It is the responsibility of the property owner or occupant to perform appropriate tree care on their “street trees”.

The owner or occupant of any lot, piece, or parcel of ground abutting or adjacent to any sidewalk or street over which there extends the branches of any tree shall at all times keep the branches or limbs thereof trimmed to the height of at least eight (8′) feet above the surface of any sidewalk or at least fourteen (14′) feet above the surface of any street.
